Marshal of France and Duke of Albufera, He originally planned to follow his father into silk manufacturing, but while serving as a cavalry volunteer, he demonstrated military acumen. Although severely wounded at Cerea, he was given command of a demi-brigade and was promoted to general. His appointment as chief of staff saw the restoration of efficiency and discipline in the army in Italy, meriting his raise to division general. Massena's army, under his command, provided stiff resistance to the Austrians that prevented the invasion of France and assisted Napoleon. His continuing success in the campaigns of 1805 and 1806 strengthened his reputation. In 1808, he was named count and married that same year. While in Spain, he was named commander of the Aragon army and governor of the region. Through his fair and intelligent administration, he brought the area into compliance. Defeated by the Spanish at Alcaniz, he roundly defeated the army of Blake y Joyes at the battle of Maria and went on to win again at Lleida. After the siege of Tarragona, he was made Marshal of France. He was made a peer of France by Louis XVIII but it was revoked after the Hundred Days. He died in the Castle of Saint Joseph near Marseille. He published his memoirs in two volumes between 1829 and 1834.
