In her early twenties, Mary Grier was tormented by a severe and painful illness for several months prior to her death on Friday morning, July 20, 1804. According to the York Recorder, "she bore [the pain] with uncommon patience, fortitude, and resolution; and though cut off in the prime of life, yet did she not discover the smallest anxiety to live. Are firm belief in the truth of Christianity enabled her to part cheerfully with all the transitory pleasures of this world, and her chief concern was to be prepared for a better [illegible]."
