Inventor. Born in Annonay, France, he was an engineer who pioneered the principles of the suspension bridge, which were at the time built with chain cables. He developed a wire wrapped cable system and with two brothers erected the first suspended bridge in Europe over the Rhône River at Tournon in 1824. He also invented the tubular steam-engine boiler in 1829.
