Since immigrants needed sponsorship to America, it is thought that Gustav Hischke's sponsors were his Aunt Caroline Hischke and her husband August Schuettpelz who settled in the How, Oconto, WI, USA in 1877 with their infant daughter. It is believed that Gustav may have boarded with Caroline and August in their log home until he purchased land in 1885.

Caroline, August and their infant daughter Emma left Kottkow and traveled west to a port aboard the SS THE QUEEN at Liverpool, England for the . They arrived at the Port of NY, on 10 sep 1877. The ship's passenger list shows no other known family was traveling with them. They then traveled to the Town of How, WI.

Three other Schuettpelz families (Martin, Ferdinand and William) has already settled in the Town of How, according to the 1880 census. Clara Hischke Hougard remembered that Caroline, August and Emma were sponsored by Martin and Augusta Schuettpelz who had arrived earlier in 1877. It is probably that these families were related.
