Mr. E.B. Backus, until recently a partner in one of the largest grainery houses at Independence, Iowa, committed suicide last week. He became despondent soon after the loss of his young wife, took to drinking, and was compelled to retire from business. He was found in the cemetery, lying across his wife's grave, with a pistol ball through his right temple, and a revolver by his side.
