There is a Fred W. Whitney, listed in the 1865 & 1870 York, Livingston County, New York census, as the grandson of George & Mary Whitney. He was born in 1857/8 in Illinois. Believe he was the son of Walter James & Margaret (Dow) Whitney. Walter & Margaret were living in Illinois on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 census, but there was no Fred with them in 1860. By 1900 Walter & Margaret were living in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California.
Fred could be the son of William Whitney born 1832, or possibly the son of Mary Ann Whitney born 1828......
