LAVALE -- John William Newcomer, 90, of LaVale, died Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Sacred Heart.
Born April 25, 1911 in Rockwood, Pa., he was the son of the late William Henry and Helen (Thomas) Newcomer.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Florence (Isherwood) Newcomer; a son, Robert Francis Newcomer.
Mr. Newcomer was self-employed from 1938 until his retirement in 1982, he owned and operated Newcomer's Jewelry Stores. His first store was located on Virginia Avenue, then moved to Baltimore Avenue and then the final location was in the Searstown Shopping Center.
Mr. Newcomer was a member of Highland Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Alta (Hanlin) Duling Newcomer; one son, Lindley Newcomer, Manassas, Va.; a step-daughter, Jane Walla, Leonardtown; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted from the Highland Baptist Church on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Lancaster officiating.
Interment will be in Bayard Cemetery.
