Dr. John Robert Brown, 89, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2010 after a brief illness.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 9, at Pat H. Foley, 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, Texas, 77018. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Franklin Church of Christ, 517 Bremond (Hwy 46 N.), in Franklin, for information, (979) 828-4205.

He was born on January 8, 1921 in Franklin, on a foothill to Carter Hill, just across from Cole's Hill in Robertson County, Texas, to George Earl and Edna Eleanor Mitchell Brown, the youngest of six siblings. He graduated from high school in Franklin and attended Sam Houston State Teachers College, where he studied horticulture, before transferring to Texas A&M and graduating there.

He served in World War II as a medical technician, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and then graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston after the war. While in school, he met and married Joy Kathryn Hardie, his wife of 59 years, who preceded him in death in 2007.

After interning in Seattle, he entered general practice in Arp, Texas. In 1955, he moved to Houston. After some years practicing in North Houston, he became a founding partner in the partnership that built Parkway Hospital. In 1986, he moved his practice to his hometown, Franklin, Texas, where he ultimately retired in 2001.

Dr. Brown was a member of Franklin Church of Christ in Franklin and Candlelight Church of Christ in Houston. He was an active supporter of apologetic projects, especially in the area of creation science, and continued to be an active supporter of conservative political causes throughout his life. With a lifelong interest in plants, he devoted his spare time to gardening and hybridizing fruit trees.

He was recognized for his expertise in breeding frost resistant citrus fruit.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and siblings, Edna Earl Maris, cattleman Charles A. Brown, Dr. James Mitchell Brown, M.D., teacher Vernon Anderson and Martha Ann Passman.

Survivors include his children, J. Robert Brown, Jr., Esq. of Houston, Sue Ellen Stewart and husband, Don, of Homewood, Ala., Barbara Mullins and husband, Mark, of Magnolia, Texas.
