Matthias was the son of Georg Jakob Riffel and Anna Apollonia Benz. He was born in Dettenheim, Baden, Wurttemburg, Germany. The entire village was moved brick by brick to a new location in June, 1813, and inland about 14 kilometers to a higher elevation because of flooding of the Rhine River. The new village was named for Karl the ruler, and Karlsdorf means "Karl's place.
He emigrated with his family about 1739.
Matthias married in about 1740 to Christina J Danner. They had 12 children. Matthias was a patriot during the Revolutionary War.
