Ralph W. Patrick, 96, of Lafayette, died July 19 in Mount Pleasant, MI.
He was one of five children born to the late Elvin Wallace and Lillie (Freestedt) Patrick of West Point. When his parents died in the 1920 Spanish flu epidemic, he was raised in that community by his grandparents, Sven and Ida Freestedt. Ralph married Elizabeth Charmaine Dotson on Dec. 26, 1939.
Ralph graduated from West Point High School and attended Purdue University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, teaching gunnery to young sailors deploying to the Pacific. Returning to Lafayette, he purchased and operated a farm in Perry Township until going to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service. Before he retired from SCS in 1980, he won the agency's Distinguished Service Award for merit and achievement. An avid environmentalist, he practiced conservation techniques on the farm, was among the first farmers in Tippecanoe County adding soybeans to crop rotations, experimenting with ground covers and wind breaks to protect against erosion and he was active in Wildcat Creek Foundation and its efforts to preserve the free-flowing stream. He and his wife lovingly restored Hershey House and resided there until their deaths.
Ralph will be remembered by his children, James Shannon Patrick of Mount Pleasant and Stephanie Patrick of Arlington, VA and his brother Wilbur S. Patrick of West Point. In addition, he is survived by daughter-in-law Anita Patrick of Mount Pleasant, son-in-law Barry L. Jenkins of Arlington; three grandchildren, Kevin F. Patrick (Tammy) of West Lafayette, Megan E. Patrick (Matthew Gurch) of Arlington, and Patrick L. Jenkins of Washington, D.C. He is great-grandfather to three: Meredith and Nolan Patrick of West Lafayette and Lauren A. Gurch of Arlington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charmaine; their infant son Duane; two brothers: Harold Patrick and Russell Patrick of Indianapolis, sister Lillie Martin of Lafayette, and daughter-in-law Deborah Patrick.
