A United States Army veteran of the War of 1812, he was a native of Kentucky, and served in the Kentucky State Legislature until he moved to Alabama. There he was elected as a Jacksonian to represent Alabama's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1829 to 1831. He later moved to Texas, served as a delegate to the 1854 Texas Constitution Convention, and co-founded Baylor University and Baylor Female College, which later the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Campus.
