Maye Moulton, age 91, of Fonda, Iowa died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Fonda Nursing and Rehab in Fonda.

She was born Elizabeth Maye Heller in Fonda, Iowa on January 2, 1920. She attended Fonda High School where she was on the girls basketball teams of 1936 and 1937 that played in the state basketball tournament. She was proud to have been named to the third Iowa Girl's Allstate team. After graduation in 1937 she attended Broadlawns School of Nursing, graduating in September of 1941. In January 1942, a little over a month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she joined the Army Nurse Corps eventually attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following training she served in the European Theater during WW II, where she was stationed in England on D-Day, June 6, 1944, working in a field hospital which received wounded directly from the front. When she returned to this country, after having been gone a little over three years, she married Dr. Sam Withers, whom she had met in England. They settled in Moultrie, Georgia and had two children, Sam and Mary Ellen (Alvarez). Dr. Withers was recalled by the Army to active service in Korea in 1952 and died there in 1953.

In 1957 Maye married George Edwin Moulton, Jr. and the family moved back to Fonda, where two more children were born, Nancy (Wagner) and George "Eddie". Maye has resided in Fonda ever since, living in her house there for more than 50 years. In those years her life was focused on her family which grew with the addition of grandchildren, Daniel, Jacob, Caleb and Tristin. Maye's family was her life; her family mattered to her more than anything else. In 1992 George Eddie died after a long illness, during which time she took care of him at home. After his death life went on for her, doing the things she enjoyed, sewing, knitting, keeping house, reading, going to church and spending as much time with her family as possible.

Maye was a long time, active member of the United Church of Christ in Fonda. There she served on a number of committees and offices, was a Deaconess and regular member of Women's fellowship. She was active in the community of Fonda and served on the first committee to establish the All School Reunion; she also delivered Meals on Wheels. She worked as a Public Health Nurse while living in Georgia and School Nurse in Fonda.

Maye taught herself to sew and knit. She made many outfits for herself and others; and crafted a cherished quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook and is fondly remembered for her sour cream chocolate chip cookies and sour dough bread. Each summer she would be found canning produce abundantly supplied by the garden she and George Eddie raised.

In 2006 with failing health and faltering memory, Maye moved to the Fonda Care Center where she has been cared for the last five years until her death.

Maye was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, 7 brothers and sisters, her first husband Dr. Sam Withers, her second husband George Edwin Moulton, Jr., her son-in-law Daniel Alvarez, and two grandchildren Jacob Wagner and Daniel Wagner.

Maye will be remembered and sadly missed by her children, Sam (Virginia) Withers, St. Louis, MO; Mary Ellen Withers, Fonda, IA/River Forest, IL; Nancy (David) Wagner, Lewiston, MN; George "Eddie" (Patty) Moulton, Prole, IA; grandchildren, Caleb Wagner and Tristin Moulton. She is also survived by one sister, Edna Peterson, Manson, IA; brothers Lyle Meyers, Indianola, IA; Dallas Meyers, Spencer, IA; Art Meyers, Cherokee, IA; and Aaron Meyers, Indianola, IA; many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center who provided wonderful care to Maye in her final years and ensured her comfort in her final days. A very special thanks to Kim Ellis whose involvement with Maye has been invaluable.
