US Congressman. Elected to represent New York's 8th, 12th, 11th and 14th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1803 to 1805, 1809 to 1811, 1815 to 1817, and 1831 to 1833. He was defeated in 1838. Also served as a Member of the New York State Assembly from 1798 to 1802, 1818 to 1822, 1826 to 1828, and in 1830, Speaker of the New York State Assembly from 1827 to 1828, Member of the New York State Senate from 1811 to 1815 for the Middle District and the 3rd District from 1840 to 1844, Delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1821, and Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1823 to 1824. He was defeated in 1824.
