BARTLETT FARMER BURNS TO DEATH
Bartlett, Kansas - Glen McPherson, 80, an invalid farmer, burned to death in his wheel chair in a fire which destroyed his farm home a mile north of Bartlett Sunday. (Nov. 20, 1966)
Neighbors saw the smoke about 2:30 p.m. and the Bartlett fire department responded. R. A. Tullis, one of the firemen, said the entire house was ablaze when equipment arrived.
Tullis said firemen used fog nozzles and were able to enter the back part of the home, usually occupied by McPherson. When he was not found they let the fire burn because of a lack of water.
Tullis said McPherson's wheel chair was noticed on the front porch, completely enveloped by flames whipped by a south wind. The body was not found until after the flames died down.
McPherson was born October 30, 1886, near Bartlett. He accompanied his parents to Indiana at the age of 11, returning to this area when he was 21, and had lived here since that time. For more than 50 years he had lived on the present farm.
His wife died in 1962 and since that time he had spent considerable time as a patient in Oswego Hospital. He last was dismissed about a month ago. He had stayed alone on the farm. Neighbors called on him daily and he was last seen about noon Sunday.
He is survived by a brother, Gerald, Chetopa.
Funeral arangements are in charge of the Miller Funeral Home, Chetopa. Glen's funeral was Wed., Nov. 23, 1966 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, Bartlett, Kansas. Rev. V.F/ Cloninger officiated; Tony Musgrave provided vocal music and Rev. Joe Don Olds provided music. The Casket Bearers were Robert Couch, Francis Couch, George Tullis, Martin Jarman, Clifford Landrith and George Nickel.
