Rev. Joseph M. Girtz, D. D., 103, died Dec. 6, 1999, in Salina, Kan.

Services are Sunday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fresno, Calif.

Joseph M. Girtz was born Dec. 2, 1896, to Frederick and Margrethe (Christensen) Girtz of Fresno, Calif. In 1924, he was ordained into the Lutheran ministry and served as a missionary in India for 15 years. He was a parish pastor in Luck, Wis., Albert Lea, Minn., Inglewood, Calif. and Redondo Beach, Calif.

In 1925, he married Mabel P. Hansen in Kaerabani, India. Following her death in 1962, he married Florence Bongfeldt who preceded him in death in 1993.

He retired from the ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1993, after 69 years of service.

He was a member of the joint union committee and vice president of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church which formed the American Lutheran Church in 1960. He was a charter board member of the California Lutheran College and of Southland Lutheran Home for the Aged. He was awarded a doctor of divinity degree in 1959 by Trinity Seminary. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by Dana College in 1975 and the Outstanding Scandinavian Award in 1990.

He is survived by a daughter, Lois Halley of San Jose, Calif., a son, Albert of Salina, Kan.; a step-son, Paul Bongfeldt of Berkley, Calif.; a step-daughter, Sharon Bongfeldt of Riverside, Calif.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by both wives; three sons, John Matthew, Andrew Mark and Joseph Michael. Memorials are suggested to the ELCA Missionary Sponsorship Fund.

Darling-Fischer Chapel of Hills, Los Gatos, Calif., is in charge of the arrangements.
