William Wirt Culbertson

U.S. Congressman. Born near Lewistown, Pennsylvania, he moved with his parents to Kentucky and engaged in the manufacture of iron. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and rose to the rank of Captain in command of Company F, 27th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives in 1870, served in the Kentucky State Senate in 1873, was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions, (1876, 1880, 1884) and Mayor of Ashland, Kentucky, (1882-83). In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. After his term, he retired to Ohio, where lived until his death at age 76. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
