Actress. She is one of the most well-known Spanish stage actresses in the 20th century. Born Mercedes Prendes Estrada, she triumphed in plays such as "Macbeth," "Romeo and Juliet," "Fuenteovejuna" and "La Dama Duende." From 1927 to 1939, she also appeared in a few films but, left the cinema after the Spanish Civil War. Among others she appeared in "Estudiantes y Modistillas" in 1927, "La Bien Pagada" in 1935 and "El Rayo" in 1936. She returned to the stage at the Spanish Theater in Madrid, performing the classics. At the end of her career in the 1950s, she appeared in television roles. In 1959, she was awarded the National Theater Award for her role in "Come Back, Little Sheba." She was a professor at what is now the Royal Higher School of Dramatic Arts. She married actor Carlos Martínez de Tejada. She is the sister of actors Luis and Mari Carmen Prendes.
