For six seasons (1939, 1943 to 1944, 1946 to 1948), he played at the outfielder and third-base positions with the Boston Bees and Chicago White Sox. Born Elmer Ralph Hodgin, he broke into the Major Leagues with the Bees on April 19th, 1939 and appeared in 32 games that year, recording 10 hits. In 1943 during his rookie season, he flourished with the White Sox, as he batted .314 finishing third-place in hitting in the American League. The following year (1944), he produced a career-high 137 hits as the White Sox starting third-baseman, prior to serving with the US Military during World War II. In 1947, Hodgin was hit in the head by a pitch thrown by the Tiger' Hal Newhouser which resulted in a concussion. In spite of this, he batted .294 for that year. In 530 regular season games, he compiled 481 hits with a .285 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he served as a Minor League manager and later worked for 30-years at a trucking company in his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina. (bio by: C.S.)
