When Orlando Fountain had about 100 volunteers, he led the company on a march into Peoria, Illinois, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park.
On August 27, 1862, Fountain and 88 of his volunteers, including now Private George W. Ramey, were mustered in as Co. E of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Fountain was elected by the men of Co. E to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out of the gates of Camp Lyon, with much fanfare, through the streets of Peoria to the railroad depot, where they boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Three weeks later the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois were in the field in Kentucky as part of Colonel Daniel McCook's Brigade in pursuit of Confederate troops.
On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those Confederate troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the next few years. After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they would go into winter camp.

At the time of the 1880 census, a George W. & Sarah A. Ramey are still found in Chillicothe Township, Peoria County, Illinois;
George W. Ramey, born c. 1835 in Indiana; Self; father's birthplace: Ohio; mother's birthplace: New York; marital status: Married; age 45 years; occupation: Grocer
Sarah A. Ramey, born c. 1838 in Ohio; spouse

In the early 1880's, the Rameys made the decision to move west. Sometime before 1885, the moved to Kansas, where they settled near Eureka, Kansas in Greenwood County. Carol Dorward found the following census records for George and Sarah Ramey.

1 March 1885 Kansas State Census (Eureka, Greenwood Co., KS)
G. W. Ramey, 50
Birth location, Indiana
Estimated birth year, about 1835

1900 Federal Census (Eureka, Greenwood Co., KS)
G. W. Ramey, 65, retired farmer

Sarah A. (Huff) Ramey apparently died sometime between 1900 and 1903, probably in Greenwood County, Kansas. George is known to have remarried and to have left a widow at the time he died. It is found in Greenwood County records that a George W. Ramey was married to Martha B. Tunnell on November 25, 1903 in Greenwood County, Kansas. This almost certainly is the older George W. Ramey and not his son.

Corporal George W. Ramey died on December 21, 1915, possibly in Topeka, Kansas. Martha collected a widows pension beginning in January of 1916.

At the time of the 1930 census, Martha may be the Martha B. Ramey found in Grandview, Ford, Kansas. She is listed as an Inmate, is widowed, but the estimated year of birth (1865) is off, place of birth (Iowa) is off and her parents are listed as having been born in England.

by Baxter B. Fite III and Carol Dorward, of Washington, Illinois.

(Baxter would love to hear from anyone, especially descendants of the Ramey family, who might be able to add to the biographical material that we have on George W. Ramey, or tell us where his mortal remains were laid.)
