Frank William Baxter
Birth: Dec. 29, 1869
Death: Apr. 22, 1896

Matabeleland Rebellion Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in London, England, he served as a Trooper in the Grey's Scouts, Bulawayo Field Force, British Army. On April 26, 1896, in a retreat during actions at the Umguza District Matabeleland, Rhodesia, Trooper Baxter noticed a wounded comrade who was lagging behind. With the enemy force in hot pursuit, he rode back and gave up his horse to the wounded comrade. He then tried to escape on foot, by hanging on to the stirrup of another mounted Trooper of the Grey's Scouts, until he was killed by enemy fire. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on May 7, 1897. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
