| Birth: | Nov. 9, 1873 | | Death: | Jun. 7, 1949 | Boer War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the 17th Lancers, British Army. On August 7, 1900, near Essenbosch, South Africa, Sergeant Lawrence and another soldier were attacked by a group of Boers. The other soldier's horse was shot and the man was thrown to the ground, dislocating his shoulder. Sergeant Lawrence at once went to his assistance, put him on his own horse and sent him on to the picket line. He then took the soldier's carbine, with his own as well and kept the enemy off until the wounded man was safely out of range. He then retired for some two miles on foot, followed by the Boers, keeping them off until help arrived. For this action, he was decorated by King Edward in London in 1902. Remaining the service, he served in World War I and II, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
