While at Kansas State, she met and learned to love Claude Bell. Folling Marie's graduation, she accepted teaching job at Hartman, Colo. She then taught in Lorraine, Ks. Following Claude's graduation from K-State with a B.S. they were married on May 29, 1937. During their first year of marriage, they lived in Hiawatha, where Claude taught mathmatics.

They moved to the farm in the spring of 1938, where they spent the balance of their married life. The farm was rented for several years and in 1950 they purchased a portion of the farm and built a new family home.

Her prime interest was her family and their well-being. She also loved music and green growing things. When the church organ arrived she taught herself to play and gave of her talent as long as her health permitted. She became an accredited life-time judge, judging horticultural at many County Fairs and Flower shows. Marie had a very special taltent for arranging flowers. She won many honors for her designs and specimens. Marie also belonged to the McDonald Federated Ladies Guild and Columbia Club. She spent many enjoyable hours designing, piecing, and quilting with her friends. She always gave generously of her time, love, and talent to her friends and her community. In addition to music, gardening, and quilting, she enjoyed oil painting, sewing, and knitting. Her grandchildren will tell you of the many beautiful sweaters that kept them warm as they grew up.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles J. and Mary I. Appel; son, Charles Marion; sisters, Leora Anderson and Georgia Jacobson; nephew, Steve Jacobson; niece, Merilee Jacobson.

After 53 years of marriage, she leaves to mourn her passing, husband, son, Ronald and wife, Cherry; grandsons, Charles, James and Robert Bell; daughter Mary Herbel; grandson Loren Senior; granddaughters, Mollie and Marie Herbel; sister, Martha Richmond and husband Rodney of Bushton, four nieces and many many friends.

A few words on paper cannot begin to tell the life of Marie or what she meant to many people, but we know she left a great void that cannot be filled. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Card of Thanks
We wish to express our sincere appreciation to our relatives, friends and neighbors for their thoughtfulness and many acts of kindness this past week. The beautiful gifts of food brought to the house, personal calls, cards and phone calls expressing your condolences, the neighbors who came in and helped to finish the wheat harvest, the dinner following the service served by the guild ladies were all greatly appreciated. You have demonstrated the true meaning of friendship and we do appreciate every deed.
