Carbolic Acid Had Designs to Take
His Life - Conflicting Reports on

                         the Night

Thomas Casey, the man that took carbolic acid on Monday night at his home on Fifty-seventh Avenue West, died during the same night from the effects of the drug. Casey, it is said, was intoxicated when he took the acid. It is generally believed that Casey took the drug unintentionally. It was in a whiskey bottle, and it is thought as he was in quite a drunken condition he thought the bottle contained some intoxicant, and reached for it.
It was rumored around West Duluth yesterday, that several had heard Casey remark that he was going to end his life, and other said that he had declared that he was going to take carbolic acid. Those that it is claimed heard such remarks could not be located, however, and it is believed that there is nothing to the talk.
Casey left a wife and three children, the eldest, a boy about 19 years of age. Casey's mother and sister, and several brothers, it is said, live in Superior. Casey has lived in West Duluth for quite a number of years.
The body was taken last night to Brainerd for interment. (Duluth News Tribune, Wednesday morning, October 4, 1899) [Contributed by Nancy Grell.]
