Clifford Hildreth

Clifford G. Hildreth of Eugene died Aug. 15 of stroke-related causes. He was 77.

Hildreth was born Dec. 8, 1917, in McPherson, Kan. He received a bachelor's degree in 1939 from the University of Kansas and a master's degree in 1941 from Iowa State University.

He married Mary Louise McGee in St. Louis on Jan. 1, 1942. Following service in the Navy Air Corps during World War II, Hildreth received a PhD in 1947, also from Iowa State.

A professor of economics, Hildreth was a faculty member at Iowa State, the University of Chicago, North Carolina State University, Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota. He was head of the Department of Economics at Michigan State, a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study of Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, and Fulbright lecturer at the University of Tokyo, at the University of Kyoto and at Hilotsubashi University in Japan.

Hildreth wrote numerous articles and books about economics and statistics. From 1960 to 1965, he was editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association. He was elected association president in 1973.

He also belonged to the American Economic Association and the Econometric Society, and was listed in Who's Who is America. His interests also included forestry.

In addition to his wife, Hildreth is survived by two sons, Richard of Eugene, and Robert of Point Reyes Station, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Hildreth of Seattle, and Mary Jane Hildreth of Sweet Home; and two grandchildren.

A family's gathering is planned. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
