DEATH OF MR. LOAM BROWN, AGED 76 YEARS.
The people of Rochelle were shadowed with gloom yesterday when the message came from his home five miles from town that Mr. Loam Brown was dead. He was sick only a week when death came to relieve his sufferings. The end came peacefully at 5 o'clock, and thus closed the career of a good and useful man. The remains were brought to Rochelle yesterday morning and kept at the home of his son, Mr. George Brown, until the funeral which took place today in the same house at 9 o'clock a.m.
Mr. Brown was born in Houston County, Ga,. In September 1832, and was in his seventy-fifth year when he died. He was a man of remarkable constitution and energy, and was rarely sick. He is a family of long lived people, his father having lived to be 76, and many of his brothers and sisters having lived to be over three score years and ten. He is survived by three sisters, the younger being 69, and one brother 63. His sisters are Mesdames Sally Murray, Green Murray, A.D. Christmas, and the brother Mr. Alijah Brown.
Besides three sister and brothers, Mr. Brown leaves his wife and twelve living children. He was married twice, the first time to a Miss Lasseter, of Dooly County, by whom twelve children were born, of these five are living. They are Mrs. C. H. McConnell, Newton, Ga.; Mrs. Henry Mashburn, Rochelle; Mrs W. F. Market, Cordele; Mrs. P. H. Willis, Cordele, Mrs. E. L. McCoy, Eufaula, Ala. His second wife is the daughter of Mrs. C. C. King, of Rochelle, and by her were born nine children making a total of 21 children. Of the last seven are living. They are Mr. George Brown, Rochelle; Mrs. M. G. Doster, Rhine; Misses Maggie, Bessie, Florence andBerdie Brown, of Rochelle, and Mr. Sam Brown, the youngest son. All these children were present at his death and funeral.
Mr. Brown was a brave soldier in the Confederate army, and was first lieutenant in the cavalry under Gen. Wade Hampton, and under the daring, brave general, Mr. Brown always acquitted himself a true and worthy soldier.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. H. McGehee, of Hawkinsville, who had known him nearly fifty years, and who paid a beautiful tribute to Mr. Brown's memory in his funeral sermon. In the death of Mr. Brown, Georgia and Wilcox lose a worthy citizen.
