James Schureman
Birth: Feb. 12, 1756
Death: Jan. 22, 1824

US Congressman, US Senator. He served during the Revolutionary War as a member of the New Jersey Militia, participating in the August 27, 1775 Battle of Long Island, New York, where he was captured by British forces (he later escaped in 1777 to rejoin the Continental Army). He was elected as a Delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress, serving from 1786 to 1778. After the United States Constitution was ratified in 1789, he was elected as one of the first four Congressmen from New Jersey to the United States House of Representatives, serving as an At-Large Delegate from 1789 to 1791 (the other three were Elias Boudinot, Lambert Cadwalader and Thomas Sinnickson). After serving again as an At-Large Delegate from New Jersey to Congress from 1797 to 1799, he was elected as a Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senator, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Rutherfurd. After serving from 1799 to 1801, he himself resigned the office. From 1801 to 1813 he was Mayor of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and then returned to Congress for a third time, being elected this time as a Federalist to represent New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District. After serving from 1813 to 1815, he declined to run for re-election, was subsequently elected again as New Brunswick Mayor, and served in that office until his death in 1824. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
