| Birth: | 1843 | | Death: | Mar. 12, 1890 |  Zulu War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Kyloe, England, he served as a Corporal in the 24th Battalion, Regiment of Foot, British Army. At Rorke's Drift, Natal, South Africa, on January 22-23, 1879, Corporal Allan with other comrades kept communications with the hospital open, despite being severely wounded. He determined which patients could be withdrawn from the hospital and when incapacitated by his wounds from fighting, continued and as soon as their wounds were dressed, served out ammunition to comrades during the night. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross on May 2, 1879. He died of influenza at age 47 in Monmouth, Wales. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
