World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Milford Haven, Wales, he served as a Private in the 11th Battalion, Welch Regiment, British Army. During actions at Macukovo, Greece, October 22 and 23, 1916, while on duty during a raid, Private Lewis was twice wounded on reaching the enemy trenches, but refused to be attended to. He was wounded again while searching enemy dug-outs and again refused assistance. When three of the enemy approached, Private Lewis immediately attacked them and single-handed, captured all three. Later, during the retirement, he went to the assistance of a wounded man and under heavy shell and rifle fire, brought him back safely, before he collapsed. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross in December 1916. He died at the age of 80 in Milford Haven, Wales. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
