Lilla Smith was the daughter of William J (Jack) Smith and Josephine "Norris" Smith. She was first married to J. W. Cook then widowed and married Leon Kernes. She is the mother of Byrtice Dairrell Cook who is interred in Evergreen Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Columbus, Georgia reported on October 16th and 17th, 1949 the death of Lilla Smith Cook Kernes as follows:
Mrs. Lilla L. Kernes, 69, wife of Leon Kernes, died yesterday at her home, 108 Eighteenth Street, after a short illness. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Striffler chapel with the Rev. R. G. Johnson, Tabernacle Baptist Church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery.
A near life-long Columbus resident, she was born October 8, 1880, in Troup County, the daughter of the late William J. and Josephine Norris Smith. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Surviving are a son, Byrtice Dairrell Cook, Columbus; two sisters, Mrs. Lola Brock, Atlanta; and Mrs. Cora Mae Kopke, Columbus; and a grandson.
