US Congressman. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he left school at 14 for employment as an iron worker and studied law in his spare time. He was admitted to the bar in 1874 and set up practice in Hudson County. Daly served as a member of the State House of Assembly (1889 to 1891), a judge of the district court of Hoboken (1891 to 1892), and in the State Senate (1892 to 1898), while becoming a powerful voice in the New Jersey Democratic Party. He was a delegate to the 1896 Democratic National Convention, Chairman of the 1896 Democratic State Convention, and a member of the State Committee from 1896 to 1898. In 1898 Daly was elected to represent New Jersey's 7th District in the Fifty-Sixth US Congress and took his seat in March 1899. His unexpected death at 49, after 16 months in office, cut short a promising career on the national political front. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
