Cittą Metropolitana di Catania
Sicilia, Italy
Death: Sep. 30, 2007

She was born Annunziata Calcagno in Bronte, Provincia di Catania, Sicilia, which is up the mountain from the large coastal city of Catania. Near the volcano, Mt.Etna.

Her maternal Grandparents were:
Grandfather: Serafino Gullo of Bronte, Sicilia
Grandmother: Annunziata Luca of Bronte, Sicilia

Her paternal grandparents were:
Grandfather: Vincenzo Calcagno of Randazzo, Sicilia
Grandmother: Francesca Calcagno of Randazzo, Sicilia

Her parents were:

Father: Tommaso Calcagno of Randazzo, Sicilia
Mother: Maria Gullo of Bronte, Sicilia

Her mother never used her married name and kept her surname of Gullo. This was common back then.

Her father was a shoemaker and also worked for the city of Bronte, lighting the gas street lamps and turning them off in the morning.

Her mother was a homemaker who was able to buy a small, very old stone house (hut) on the main drag (Corso Umberto#72) in town and sold vegitables there. It was a very big thing for poor Sicilians to own property and she was so proud of this little stone hut.

Nancy had the following brothers and sisters listed in order of birth :

Francesca, later married name Francis Zerbo.
Gaspare, died at age 4
Vincenza, later married name Jenny Laurie
Elizabetta, later married name Elisabeth Gangi
Giussepe (Pepino)
Agatina, never married, died in her 20's in Palermo
Serafino (Ensulo) For some reason they had two sons with the same name. Family always called him Ensulo for obvious reasons.

Nancy studied nursing and in 1938 became a registered nurse in Italy. She worked in several hospitals and also became a traveling nurse. She went through some very tough times during WWII when Italy was being heavly bombed by the Allies.

Around 1950 her older sister Jenny Laurie, who was living in San Jose,CA, sponsered Nancy to come to the USA. Jenny later introduced Nancy to her future husband John B. Orecchia.
