James "Melvern"West, 75

J. Melvern West was born February 9, 1908, at Herman, Nebraska to Jesse and Louise West. He graduated from Herman High School and Omaha Business School.

He married Blandena Warrick in Blair on July 17, 1928. They were blessed with two children.
They resided at Herman their entire life.

He was employed at the Plateau State Bank and then at Hancock Farm Equipment Co. until his appointment as postmaster in 1935. He was postmaster for 30 years, retiring in 1965.

He was past master of Landmark Lodge No. 222 at Herman. He was also a member of Royal Arch Chapter No. 24 at Tekamah, Jordan Commandry No. 24 at Blair, Omaha Council No. 1 at Omaha and the Tangier Shrine at Omaha.

He has served his community as a member of the Herman Volunteer Fire Department and Herman Community Club. He had also been active with the Salvation Army and the Selective Service System. He had been the Herman Village Clerk for many years and was a member of the Herman Methodist Church.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 7, at the American Legion Hall at Herman for J. Melvern West, 75, of Herman, who died October 4, 1983, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and one sister, Mrs. John (Agnes) Sutton.

Left to cherish his memory are two sons, Jack West of Grand Island and Warren West of Omaha; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Richard (June) Nelson of Blair; and a brother, Ernest West of Dent, Minnesota.

Pallbearers will be his grandson, J. Michael West, and nephews, Hugh Hunt, Richard Hunt, Stephen Sutton, David West, Ernest West, Gary West and Neil West.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Broderson, Stanley Brunton, Lee Claborn, George (Joe) Fitch, Clarence (Shorty) Hansen, Frank Korshoj, Gus Lowe, Ted Swanson and Allen Yowell.

The Rev. Larry Orvis will officiate.Mrs. Eugene Husk will be organist. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Burial will be in the Herman Cemetery.
