Melvin Dean Cannon Melvin Dean ( Mel) Cannon was born April 29, 1929, in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, to Emmons and Leona ( Kast ) Cannon. He graduated from Ventura, Iowa High School in 1947. Mel married Ruth Audry Rowcliffe on September 6, 1953, in Mason City, Iowa. He died on Monday, April 13, 1998, at St. Josephs Hospital in New Hampton. Iowa.
Mel worked at White Farm ( Oliver ) in Charles City, Iowa and continued to be employed there after he and Ruth moved to rural Elma to farm. During the past few years he was also a substitute school bus driver.- he loved driving, whether semi's, motor homes or school buses. Melvin also served Howard County as a County Supervisor for eight years.
Among the things important to Melvin were farming , his family and church. He was a devoted husband and loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed attending school activities- especially the sports events. He was baptized and confirmed August 12, 1953, and was a faithful member of St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church.
He was known for his wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed morning coffee with the " guys" in Elma each day, and had served as chairmen of the renovation project for the Elma Train Depot Museum. Among his hobbies were collecting antique tractors, feeding and watching birds, hunting, camping, and country music. He and Ruth always attended the annual Bluegrass Festival in Strawberry Point. Melvin is survived by his wife, Ruth, and their children, Keith ( and his wife Marcia) of Elma, Sue ( and husband Kelly) Ollman of Mason City, and Barbara ( and husband Merle) Havlik of Elma; seven grandchildren; one great- grandson; his twin sister Melva, and one brother Joe. He was preceded in death by his youngest son Steve, his parents and brother Earl.

One of the projects that Melvin enjoyed was working with his friends on repairing the Elma Railroad Depot. Every morning before starting their work they would meet for coffee before setting off to work. He collapsed at the cafe that morning.
