George served his country in both World War II and in the Korean War. He had a career in the Air Force, where he served much of his time in the Pacific, doing transport and Air-Sea rescue work. His service took him to airbases in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.
George married Marjorie Alice Cross on August 11, 1962 in Oneonta, New York, where George had been teaching.
George then attended several universities (Grinnell College, University of Michigan and University of Illinois) in his quest for a PhD in history. He taught history for a few years at the University of New York-Oneonta and for 20 years at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

George and Marjorie had no children.
