Walter H. Bennett was born in Pocahontas, Randolph County, Arkansas. The birth date for Walter from His World War I draft registration card listed his date of birth as June 16, 1896. The year of birth is in doubt because his census records do not confirm his year of birth as 1896. His 1900 Census record listed his month and year of birth as June 1893 and his 1910 census record listed him as 16 years of age at that time. His 1920 census record listed him as 23 years old at that time and based on his two previous census records that appears to be incorrect. So it appears his actual year of birth was 1893 and not 1896.
Walter H. Bennett was a son of Henry Sterling Bennett (1855-1916) and Sarah Jane "Sadie" Pratt (1859-1924). Henry Sterling Bennett. Walter was never married and had no offspring and of course no descendants.
He died a tragic death trying to save his brother-in-law, Luther Gentry, when Luther was drowning at Skaggs Ferry on the Black River in Randolph Co., Arkansas. Luther Gentry was the husband of Walter's older sister Birdie L. (Bennett) Gentry. She sank into a deep depression after the death of her husband and brother and took her own life later that year (1923).
This tragic drowning occurred on July 8, 1923. Walter tried to come to Luther's aid but when Walter reached Luther he grabbed hold of Walter and dragged him under and they both drowned. There was a newspaper article on this double drowning that was published in the "Pocahontas Star Herald" newspaper.
