Issy Smith
Birth: Sep. 16, 1890
Death: Sep. 10, 1940

World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the 1st Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. At Ypres, Belgium, on April 26, 1915, Corporal Smith on his own initiative, went forward towards enemy positions, to the assistance of a severely wounded man. He carried the man to safety, a distance of 250 yards, under extremely heavy machine gun and rifle fire. He further displayed great gallantry, in assisting, voluntarily, in bringing in many more wounded men throughout the day, when casualties were heavy. For the greatest devotion to duty, he was awarded Victoria Cross Medal in August, 1915 and promoted Sergeant. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
