Civil War Union Army Officer. Served in the Civil War as a officer in the 2nd New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, rising from Captain of Company I to Colonel and commander of the unit. He commanded the regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg, where it was detached from his brigade to bolster the Union forces in the Peach Orchard along Emmitsburg Road. It put up a strong but futile defense, suffering 44 men killed before being pushed back by superior Confederate forces. At the time of the Battle he was only 22 years of age. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
