Born Francis Thomas Sullivan in St. Louis, Missouri, he began his career performing in vaudeville and was on Broadway in the late 1920s. He made his feature picture debut in "Murder at the Vanities" (1934) and appeared in over 240 films between 1934 and 1968. His credits include "Hold That Co-ed" (1938), "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "Pal Joey" (1957), "Bye Bye Birdie" (1963) and "Funny Girl" (1968). He also was a regular on countless television shows such as "Hey Jeannie!", "Dragnet", "Perry Mason", "Maverick", "Leave it to Beaver" and "The Virginian". He died at age 67.
