Sarah was the daughter of William Norman Duke Sr and mother Sarah Green.
Sarah married Simon Murphy II 27 Apr 1752 Union County South Carolina.
A descendant of Sarah's lineage, who also lives in South Carolina, informs me that Sarah is buried on former lands of Sion & Susannah [White] Murphy's home place, today known locally as "Murphy Cemetery". Others, of this Murphy family in Union County are buried at the Murphy-Duncan Cemetery, which off of hwy. 49, from the old Bombing Rang Road, formerly old Byrd Murphy's Land.
Just a mile east of Sarah's burial grounds is her son Mark and wife Holly, at the "Mark & Holly Murphy Cemetery", his former property, now part of Sumter National Forest.
Has been said that Sarah was born in Old Bute County North Carolina, which became Franklin and Warren Counties NC, very near the border with NC and VA.
Simon was killed by Tories, during the
revolutionary War, on his way to
his old home place in Surry Co VA, and
taken to that place for burial, by a Person
that knew him.
The location in Surry county of the
old Plantation/Location was described
in a book "The Fair Forest Story":
"This plantation was near the Assmosso Swamp in Surry County, VA."
They had the following children:
Hannah, Margia, Delilah, Drucilla,
Miriam, Mark, Sion, Sarah, Elizabeth,
William, Zilpha, Mary, Unity.
Sarah is a Revolutionary War veteran:
Provided Provisions and forage
for the Patriots in 1782 & 1783
Amt Paid: 14 Pounds Sterling
Stub Indent # 3325 Page 75
dated: 18 July 1786
Sarah placed herself and her children
in grave danger, anyone caught helping
the Patriots were summarily executed on
the spot, as her husband was, in NC, when
stopped by tories who merely suspected he
was helping the Patriots, and shot him to
death. Sarah lived in the up country of SC,
Tory territory and fear was part of their
lives. But the cause was greater than self.
Cemetery is on Private Property, please abide by South Carolina laws when visiting such sites.
