John served as a Junior, 3rd Engineer, S.S. Robert H. Colley, U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II.

He died in the "Line Of Duty" when the Colley simply broke in two due to extremely heavy seas, described as 80 foot waves, in the North Atlantic during the war.
