Salley, Thomas Raysor, Jr., 87 of Richmond, died Thursday, September 15, 2011. He was preceded in death by his son Henry Lawrence Salley. He is survived by his wife, Sophie Ann Salley; son, Thomas R. Salley III; and four grandchildren, Lawton, Charlotte, Jack and Reid. Raysor attended Hampden Sydney College before WWII, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1947. He was a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, 8Th Air Force, Stationed out of Grafton Underwood, England, and was the Captain of a B-17. He completed 35 missions, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He later served in the US Counsler Service, in several of the German cities previously only visited from the air, and assisted in the rebuilding of post-war Germany. In 1955, he returned to Richmond with his wife Sophie Ann Salley, and began his career as an investment advisor and stockbroker. Over his 40 years in the securities business, he worked at Davenport & Co., Scott & Stringfellow and Wheat Securities. Mr. Salley's outside interests included extensive reading, over a broad range of subjects and music. He was one of the founders of the Richmond Symphony and also reviewed books for the local newspaper. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Sons of the Revolution and the Country Club of Virginia, where he enjoyed tennis with a long standing group of tennis partners. Earlier in his life he was an avid sailor, having been one of the first members of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Graveside services will be held 11am Thursday, September 22, in Hollywood Cemetery. The Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home is in Charge of arrangements.
