Life-long resident dead

Ernest E. Bennett, a life-long resident of Portage County, died at his home in the town of Buena Vista this morning at 1:30 o'clock. At the time of his death he was forty eight yeras of age. For the past five years he has been sick from tuberculosis. Five years ago he went to Texas for his health and stayed for about four months. He came back to Portage county greatly benefitted and had high hopes of recovery. In February of this year he was taken worse and two months ago took to his bed. Since then he gradually wasted away until death.

Ernest E. Bennett was born August 24, 1866, in the town of Buena Vista on his father's farm. Twenty-six years ago, when a young married man, he moved to Stevens Point and worked at the carpenter trade at the Soo railroad shops. he lived here four years when with his family he moved to the home place to care for his father's farm. Although not a member of any church, he lived an every day life of honesty, goodness and industry. For three years he served as town treasurer, one year as town clerk, and this spring when taken sick, resigned his third term as town clerk. He was a member of two fraternal insurance orders, Maccabees and Beavers, carrying $2,000 insurance.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. John Kendall, of the Buena Vista Methodist Church, officiating. The body will be buried in the Liberty Corners cemetery.

Mr. Bennett approached the end calmly and resignedly. On Saturday, and again on Sunday, he asked the attending physician as to his condition, saying he wanted to know the truth. On both occasions he was told there was no hope. He retained consciousness until a short time before life ebbed away.

The maiden name of Mrs. Bennett was Minnie Adams, and his father was the late Jay Bennett, one of Portage county's pioneers and a soldier of the civil war.

The relatives surviving are: His wife, Mrs. Minniee Bennett, his mother, Mrs. Jemima Bennett, both living on the old home place; Mrs. S.W. Carley, a sister, this city; four children, Raymond Bennett of the town of Oasis, Mrs. Ray O'Keefe of Arnott, Misses Stella and Viva Bennett, at home.
