Pioneer Woman Dies at Millville
Millville township bade farewell to another of its pioneer residents Tuesday afternoon when the body of Mrs. John Becker was laid to rest in the Niehaus cemetery. Mrs. Becker passed away at her home at Millville Saturday night, Jan. 16, after a brief illness. She was in her 82nd year and had been a resident of this county practically all her life.
In spite of her advanced age she had been hale and hearty until just a few weeks before her death. Sickness was almost unknown to her throughout her long life.
Born in Ohio
Helen Kauffman, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Kauffman, was born in Ohio, June 16, 1850. While still a small child she came west with her parents and settled in this section. She was united in marriage to to John Becker in 1873 to which union were born six children, five of whom are now living. Her husband and one daughter preceded her in death a number of years ago.
The surviving children are George, John and Arch, all of Millville, and Mr. Nora Latta and Mrs. Pearl Hyde, of Elgin, Iowa. There are also eleven grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from St. Paul's United Lutheran church, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. James Sopko officiate.

John and Barbara Helen Kauffman Becker
John Becker b. July 7, 1848, in Vorheim, Province of Pommern, Stadien, Creiss, Kingdom of Prussia, the son of Martin Becker and wife, (name unknown). John, at age 7, came with his parents to the U.S. in 1855, landing at Castle Garden, N.Y. Came to Iowa and settled on a farm north of Millville, Ia. In 1865 the family moved to Stewartville, Minn., where they farmed and resided until their death. When of age, John came back to Millville and helped build the railroad tracks about 1870.
John m. Barbara Helen Kauffman June 12, 1873. Helen b. June 16, 1850, in Ohio, to Rudolph and Catherine Kauffman. While still a small child, the family came west and settled in Dingsville in Mallory Twp.
John began a mercantile business, a cooper shop, a saloon, and inn and dance hall in Oct. of 1874 in Millville.
They were the parents of six children: George, Leonora, John H., Sada b. April 27, 1884, d. May 12, 1907 of tuberculosis, Arch X., and Pearl. George b. July 29, 1874, m. Amy Bush b. Feb. 7, 1879, one child, Gwendolen who was in the U.S. Army, m. Joe Ruzis and lived in Calif. She d. April 30, 1974 and was cremated. George d. Sept. 9, 1936 and Amy d. Nov. 3, 1913, are buried in Bethel Cemetery in Mallory Twp.
Lenora (Nora) b. June 21, 1878, m. Arthur W. Latta June 27, 1906. Arthur W. b. Aug. 29 1864 at Denison, Ia. They have four children: Helen b. May 16, 1907, m. Clarence E. Tiffany b. Oct. 17, 1892, d. Nov. 20, 1973. Helen resides in Manchester, where Clarence is buried. Roliffe A. b. June 30, 1910, m. Edith Bennett, no children. M. second time to Sandra Hyler, have four sons: Mickey, David, Jan, and Shane. Live at Bellevue, Ia. Roliffe d. Jan. 5, 1967, is buried in Guttenberg City Cemetery. Harold Wright Latta b. Aug. 29, 1911, d. Dec. 4, 1911.
Arthur W. Jr. b. Oct. 7, 1921, m. Iva Jaquette Dec. 21, 1942. They have two children: Ja Rock m. Emilie Borcherding and a daughter, Jackie, who is married. Arthur W. d. March 16, 1947, and Nora d. March 22, 1956. Are all in the family plot at Guttenberg.
John d. Jan. 19, 1899 and Barbara d. Jan. 16, 1932, and daughter Sadie are all buried in St. John's Cemetery (the former Dittmer(sic/Niehaus) Cemetery) in Jefferson Twp. on Jolly Ridge Road.
Their youngest girl, Pearl, m. George W. Hyde.
