Herbert James
Birth: Nov. 13, 1888
Death: Aug. 15, 1958

World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. During an assault by the Turks at Gallipoli, Turkey, on June 28, 1915, Lieutenant James found himself alone with a wounded colleague lying amongst a heap of dead soldiers. He pulled the soldier from the pile to a safe place and set about securing the trench with sandbags and dead bodies. He then single-handedly fought off the enemy, exchanging rifle fire and bombs with Turkish troops until he was finally relieved by reinforcements. For this deed of bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in January, 1916 and later achieved the rank of Major. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
