Walter Bender, Ephrata, ex-cabinetmaker, dies--
Walter Carpenter Bender, eighty-two, Ephrata cabinetmaker and musician, died Monday night of the infirmities of old age. He lived at 22 W. Main St., Ephrata, but had been an invalid patient at the Ephrata Nursing Home for more than a year. His wife, the former Sallie Frankhauser, died in 1955. He was born in New Holland, son of the late Carpenter Weidler and Alice Olivia Steffy Bender. A horseman, he worked at the T. A. Wilson Clare Point Stock Farm racing stables at the turn of the century. When Wilson died in 1910, Bender went to work at the Ephrata Planing Mill, where he worked as a cabinetmaker--a trade he learned from his father. He was known for his craftsmanship in building custom church furniture, especially intricate chancel balustrades. He retired in 1955 after many years with the Textile Machine Works in their woodworking shop in Wyomissing. Bender was a musician and played trombone in the Ephrata Mountain Springs Rifles' Band, a well-known organization about 60 years ago. He also played in the Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday School Orchestra, Ephrata, and Beam's Orchestra, Hinkletown. As late as three years ago he was trombonist in the Sunday School Orchestra of Bergstrasse Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Bender also was a member of the Knights of Pythias, the Pioneer Fire Co., and various Textile Machine Co., and senior citizens' civic and relief groups. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Buckwalter, Allentown; and Miss Maria K. Bender, New Holland; aslo several nieces and nephews.
