Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipienr. As a Sergeant in Company D, 9th New Yokr Volunteer Calvary, he earned his Medal of Honor for gallant conduct at Crumps Creek, Virginia on May 27, 1864. On that day, with a small force on a reconnaissance, he "drove off a strong body of the enemy, charged into another force of the enemy's cavalry and stampeded them, taking 27 prisoners." His medal was awarded on May 13, 1892. During the Civil War Putnam was wounded twice - once at Trevilian Station, Virginia on June 11, 1864, and at Five Forks, Virginia on April 1, 1865.  (bio by: Eamonn)
