Born on a farm near Terre Hill in East Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1896. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1900 and practiced law in Lancaster. After serving as county solicitor of Lancaster County from 1912 to 1923, and as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1928, he was elected as a Republican to represent first Pennsylvania's 10th, then 9th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman William W. Griest. He served from 1930 to 1947, and resumed his law career once leaving Congress after seventeen years. (bio by: Eamonn)
