Long-time funeral director and embalmer Ralph Lee Chambers Sr. of Maryville died Tuesday at Morningside Village Assisted Living. He was 90.

Chambers started his funeral director career in 1948 at Miller's Funeral home, where he worked for 27 years, according to his grandson, Jason Chambers . In 1969, he joined Leonard Smith in ownership of Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, as well as Grandview Cemetery and the Flower Shop.

He retired in 2006.

Jason Chambers said his grandfather cared about the community. "He loved (the work) and loved the people, that is why he did the funeral service," Jason Chambers said. "He loved others and felt he was helping them."

Chambers served in several philanthropic organizations, including the Kerbela Shrine Temple, Blount County Shrine Club, New Providence Masonic Lodge #128, F&AM, and American Legion Post 13. He also served in World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Not only did Chambers set an example of caring for his family, he also taught them a philosophy that served him well throughout his life.
