Margaret Ella Wilson, known as Ella, daughter of Colonel B.W. and Mary E. (Lux) Wilson, married Elam Wesley Boyer on April 28, 1881.
Ella attended schools southeast of Chelsea, Iowa and later taught school in Tama and Poweshiek County.
They are the parents of Alyce, Lelia and Orange. They also raised three of the motherless children of David (Delia Lucinda Wilson) Boyer, Mary Elizabeth, Bartholomew and Dorothea Jane.
Elam was a leader in the community and loved his home and family. He toiled with diligence and devotion in the interest of home, family, school, church, community and country. His health began to fail in 1913. In 1917 he suffered a nervous breakdown from which he never recovered and on June 23, 1917, at the age of 58 years, he took his own life.
After Elam's death, Ella moved to Toledo. In 1939 she moved to Marshalltown, Iowa and lived with her daughter.
During her life she was very active in many organizations in the church and community. She was an outstanding member of the Eastern Star and Toledo Women's Club. She enjoyed sewing and made all of her own clothes. As a volunteer for the Red Cross, she spent many hours sewing and mending for them. She loved young people and maintained a youthful attitude and outlook on life.
Besides her extensive sewing, embroidering and crocheting, she kept scrapbooks for well over 50 years in which she put clippings about people she wanted to remember. She also kept a diary. She was an avid reader and once said, "I read everything - I'd lots rather read than listen to the radio, although there are some radio programs I like. Mostly though, when I listen to the radio, I like to hear "smart talk" - that is men and women who really know something about world events or news".
Ella died August 13, 1946. Her life motto was "Expect to live forever but prepare to die tomorrow". She was a blessing to all who knew her.
Elam and Ella are buried in the Rector Cemetery near Chelsea, Iowa.
