Conductor. He conducted opera, ballet and light symphonic programs with many groups. Smallens who was born in Russia conducted the Boston Opera Company from 1911 to 1914, Anna Pavlova Ballet Company from 1917 to 1919, Chicago Opera Company from 1919 to 1921, Philadelphia Orchestra from 1928 to 1947, and Radio City Music Hall from 1947 to 1950. He also conducted world premieres of Sergei Prokofiev's "The Love Of Three Oranges" in 1921, and George Gershwin's "Porgy And Bess" in 1935, as well as many others. He also conducted the music for the documentary films, "The Plow That Broke The Plains" (1936), "The River" (1937), and "The Fight For Life" (1940). He retired from music in 1959.
